Technician Utilization Calculator

Measure how much of a technician’s paid time is spent on jobs and driving.

Technician utilization compares the hours a tech spends working on jobs with the hours you pay for. Enter figures for the same period, such as one week.

On-job utilization60.0%
Utilization including travel80.0%
Other hours8

How it is calculated

  • On-job utilization = hours on job sites ÷ paid hours × 100
  • Utilization including travel = (hours on job sites + drive hours) ÷ paid hours × 100
  • Other hours = paid hours − job hours − drive hours

Worked example

With the starting values shown in the calculator:

  • Hours on job sites: 24
  • Drive hours: 8
  • Paid hours: 40
  • On-job utilization: 60.0%
  • Utilization including travel: 80.0%
  • Other hours: 8

Using the result

Other hours cover everything that is not a job or a drive: morning meetings, loading the truck, parts pickup, paperwork and gaps between calls. A low on-job figure with high drive hours points to a routing problem. A low figure with low drive hours points to scheduling gaps.
