Fact Checking Policy

Last updated: October 4, 2026

Readers use this site to make decisions about pay, pricing and their work. This policy explains how we check what we publish and what we do when we get something wrong.

Sources

  • For rates, rules and statistics we use primary sources first: the IRS, the U.S. Department of Labor, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, OSHA, the EPA, state agencies and manufacturer documentation.
  • We link to the source when we quote a figure, and we state the year or date the figure applies to.
  • Industry reports and vendor surveys are named as such, so you can judge them for yourself.

Calculators

  • Every calculator shows its formula in plain language.
  • Each formula is tested against worked examples before the page is published.
  • Default values, such as the IRS mileage rate, are reviewed when the official figure changes.

Drafting and review

Articles are researched and drafted with the help of AI writing tools. Rates, rules and statistics are checked against the cited sources before an article is published, and the sources are listed at the end of the article. We do not publish technical or safety guidance as fact unless it can be traced to an authoritative source.

Opinion and estimates

Where something is our opinion, a rule of thumb or an estimate, we say so.

Corrections

If you find an error, tell us through the contact page and include the page address. We investigate every report. When we correct a factual error we update the page and, for significant changes, add a note saying what changed and when.

Updates

Pages show the date they were last updated. We revisit pages that quote time-sensitive figures at least once a year.
