Drive time is paid time that cannot be billed as repair work. Enter the average drive time per call and what a technician costs per hour to see how much each trip costs before any work starts.
How it is calculated
- Travel labor cost per call = (drive minutes ÷ 60) × loaded labor cost per hour
- Travel labor cost per day = cost per call × calls per day
Worked example
With the starting values shown in the calculator:
- Round-trip drive time per call (minutes): 40
- Loaded labor cost per hour: $45.00
- Service calls per day: 5
- Travel labor cost per call: $30.00
- Travel labor cost per day: $150.00
- Drive hours per day: 3.33
Using the result
Loaded labor cost is the hourly wage plus payroll taxes, insurance and benefits. Use this figure to set a trip charge or to check that your service-call minimum covers travel. Tighter routing and dispatching by zone both reduce this cost.
